Ian Trethowen

For the development and ongoing support of WanderSearch.

Ian Trethowen has made a profound impact on the effectiveness of search and rescue for people with cognitive impairments. He was the original developer of the WanderSearch technology, with support from Ken Simpson and others from the search and rescue sector.

Ian developed and manufactured the first devices, which were issued in Nelson in 2006 and quickly showed their value. The news spread quickly, and now devices are issued by volunteers nationwide.

Each year at Volunteering Canterbury not-for-profit voluntary organisations within the Canterbury region are invited to nominate volunteers to receive an Award. Their purpose has been to recognise outstanding efforts and achievements by volunteers of all ages, in all sectors.

This year we are so thrilled to announce WanderSearch Canterbury volunteer Christine Brennan will be recognised with an award. Christine was one of the first individuals to offer to volunteer her time back in 2019. Every month Christine supports us to deliver devices to vulnerable individuals at risk of going missing.

Christine brings a wealth of experience to the role and her empathy and compassion enable her to connect easily with clients/whanau and ensure clients feel at ease. Christine is respectful, sensitive to each individual’s needs and will always go above and beyond to make sure they are comfortable. Christine is reliable, organised, always happy to help train new voluteers and her attention to detail ensures all runs smoothly. Sourcing volunteers for this niche role is always difficult and we really appreciate the time she willingly gives and her dedication to the role for so many years. We would not be able to protect vulnerable individuals without amazing volunteers such as Christine. Thank you and Congratulations!
